Volunteering

be part of unc health’s mission to promote wellness and healing in your community. volunteers are vital to our delivery of exceptional health care at our hospitals and clinics.

whether you’re helping patients access support services or families find their way around our campuses, you’ll make a difference as a volunteer.

Volunteer Opportunities

take advantage of the opportunity to assist patients, visitors, and staff at many of our campuses and communities with your time and talent. bilingual volunteers are welcome. based on your experiences and interests, you may be able to volunteer in one of the following areas:

  • Administrative and clerical help – Assist departments and clinics by answering phones, scanning documents, data entry, and more
  • Admission and registration – Help staff check-in patients and visitors for appointments or procedures
  • Caregiver visitor guidance – Visit caregivers of UNC Health patients and provide information about supportive services available to them
  • Gift shops – Help staff operate UNC Health hospital gift shops through activities like floral delivery, shelf stocking, and creating product displays
  • Hospice – Provide support to in-home hospice patients through reading, companionship, or running light-duty errands as needed
  • Labor and delivery guidance – Guide tours of prospective and new parents through labor and delivery units at UNC Health hospitals
  • Latino clinic translation – Use your bilingual expertise to help patients and families who speak Spanish navigate the UNC Health system
  • Military Visitation Program (MVP) – If you’re an active or past military member, offer friendship and support to active, retired, and former military patients and families at UNC Health hospitals
  • Pet therapy program – If your dog is registered with , see how your pet can make a difference as a volunteer visitor providing comfort to patients
  • Waiting room services – Serve as a liaison between staff and visitors or families of patients

Volunteers in High School & College

if you’re a student looking to give back to your community, unc health locations welcome high school- and college-age volunteers. you may participate in our:

  • Gift shops
  • Imaging and radiology labs
  • Nursing units
  • Outpatient clinics
  • Waiting rooms

high school students must have finished the first year of high school (freshman year) and be at least 14 years old.

Group Volunteers

乐优炫彩appif you want to volunteer with friends or members of an organization you belong to, some unc health locations accommodate groups of volunteers. you may participate in a block shift specifically designated to group volunteers. as a part of a group, each member is required to:

  • Complete and submit an online application
  • Complete Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training

your group may schedule a maximum of 8 dates per semester.

Volunteer Training

乐优炫彩appevery volunteer goes through orientation and receives training specific to the role you’ll fulfill. before your first assignment, you’ll get training for general unc health hospital protocols, safety, and infection control.

乐优炫彩appeach volunteer area has a position description that outlines duties and expectations. once you’re assigned to your location, department, or shift, you’ll be given further details, training, or shadowing for your duties.

Guidelines & Requirements

for the safety, security, and respect of all patients, we require volunteers and volunteer groups to:

  • Get an annual flu vaccine
  • Let your volunteer coordinator know if you are ill and stay home so you don’t expose patients to your illness
  • Not bring food to patients
  • Not take photographs of patients
  • Not plan activities that are religious
  • Plan to work at least one 4-hour shift weekly

Volunteer Dress Code

all unc health volunteers are required to follow our dress code, which includes a volunteer polo shirt or jacket, as well as a unc health id badge you must wear at all times.

as a volunteer, you’ll be required to pay a $10 fee that covers your volunteer uniform.

We also require that volunteers wear khakis, dress pants, or skirts that fall below the knee. Denim, shorts, and open-toed shoes are not allowed during volunteer shifts.
